Mike began working at Eckart in November of 1969 when founder Everett Eckart asked him if he would be interested in working part-time unloading trucks and stocking shelves. After a few months it became a full time job. Mike worked through every phase of the business from unloading trucks by hand, (including unloading cast iron tubs, cast iron soil pipe, furnaces, air conditioners, water heaters, water closets etc.), stocking shelves, and working orders, to counter sales and delivering material in a stripped down school bus.
In the early 70’s, Mr. Eckart was injured in an accident and couldn’t go out on his sales route for a while so he asked Mike to take over until he was able to go back out. Mr. Eckart decided to leave Mike in sales from that point on. Mike later became Vice President of Sales, and eventually he became CEO, President and controlling owner.
In 2014 Mike handed the presidency over to his son Philip. Mike has strengthened the company considerably in his tenure and is still very involved in the day-to-day sales and management of the company. He has always been involved in many organizations throughout the industry.
He is also very involved in his church and local community. Mike was raised by his mother and learned the most important things in life from her. She taught him that there is nothing more important than family and church. He has always been involved deeply in both. His philosophies in life and business came from his mother. “If you work hard, if you’re honest and if you do what you say you’re going to do, you can’t fail in life or business.” These are three very simple but powerful beliefs. The last belief he has always lived by is “Have a genuine concern for all people” If people feel that concern from you they will always want to be part of your life.
